Moore Homes for Sale | Oklahoma

Moore sits directly between Oklahoma City and Norman along I-35, making it one of the metro’s most convenient and affordable family-friendly suburbs — a city that has rebuilt itself into one of Oklahoma’s most resilient communities.

How It Got Built

  • Moore sits on land opened in the Land Run of 1889. The Southern Kansas Railway laid track through the area in 1886-87 and first called the stop “Verbeck.”
  • The name “Moore” comes from Al Moore, a railroad employee who lived in a boxcar at the site and painted his name on a board nailed to it — when a post office was designated on May 27, 1889, the name stuck.
  • Moore incorporated as a town in 1893, by then home to a hotel, livery, general stores, a lumber company, and other small businesses.
  • The city grew rapidly after a 1961 annexation of 21.6 square miles — population jumped from 1,221 in 1960 to 19,761 by 1970, and stands at 62,793 as of the 2020 Census, making Moore roughly Oklahoma’s 7th-largest city.
  • Moore is one of the most storm-resilient communities in the country: it withstood a devastating F5 tornado on May 3, 1999, and an EF5 tornado on May 20, 2013. Both Plaza Towers and Briarwood elementary schools were rebuilt and reopened by 2014-15, and the city has since led the way on strengthened building codes and storm-shelter adoption.

What You’re Actually Buying Into

Moore’s biggest draw is location: sitting right on I-35 between OKC and Norman means an easy commute either direction, plus a strong retail corridor along the interstate. Moore Public Schools runs three high schools (Moore, Southmoore, and Westmoore), six junior highs, and 25 elementary schools, serving a community that skews toward young families. Tinker Air Force Base is a short drive northeast and is a major regional employer for many Moore residents. Buck Thomas Park and the city’s other public parks anchor a suburb that has consistently prioritized affordability relative to OKC and Norman without giving up easy metro access — and a community that has proven, twice, that it rebuilds stronger.
