Quail Creek is a golf-course community in north Oklahoma City, built around Quail Creek Golf & Country Club, stretching roughly from May Avenue to Hefner Parkway and from Hefner Road up to Memorial Road — about two square miles, making it one of the largest, most established neighborhoods in the state.
How It Got Built
- Development began in 1960 when a large portion of the Browne family farm — former country home of civic leader Virgil Browne — was sold to build the community; a steering committee of local businessmen chaired by Boston Smith, with developer Jack Johnston, brought the plan to life
- The golf club broke ground November 30, 1960 and opened December 16, 1961 — 158 acres total, with a Floyd Farley-designed 18-hole, par-72, 7,157-yard course
- The 40,000-square-foot clubhouse was built with more than 2,000 tons of Silverdale Stone limestone
- The club hosted the Oklahoma City Open from 1962–1967 (Arnold Palmer won in 1964, Tony Lema in 1966) and later the Southwestern Bell Classic (1988–1990)
- At the time it was developed, the area was described as “extremely suburban and almost rural” — homes were built out in phases from the 1960s through the late 1990s
What You’re Actually Buying Into
Quail Creek is a mix of mid-century modern originals — stone pillars, wood cabinetry, low-pitched rooflines — alongside ranch-style homes from later phases and contemporary remodels, on both golf-course and lakefront lots. The neighborhood is anchored by Berta Faye Rex Quail Creek Park (trails, gazebo, playground), Quail Creek Elementary School, and an active HOA that runs a July 4th parade, summer concerts, and Christmas sleigh rides. The private country club remains the heart of the community for members.
